1864 New Haven Sept 17th U.S. Draft Rendezvous Dear Eliza I would like time to find out the reason why you have not answered my letters. I have at least written 4 and only one has been answered. If you intend to make a fool of me say so and I will write no more. This spoiling writing paper for nothing dont [sic] pay where it comes high. I wrote a letter just a week ago to day and told you to send me $50 to pay for my clothes and to speculate on but

2 as yet I have herd [sic] nothing from it. So I took and borrowed $30 from Seymour Cook the old Drum major of the 3rd Vt and now of the 7th he has gone to Vermont to report to his Reg and will call at Brandon to get it but be careful of him for he is a sharp old cuss and may want more. He made some $400 here in a little more than a month and I think it would be a fine thing if I had the money to do the same I want you to send me $20 and what you give Cook will make up the 50, I borrowed $1 the the other day and I cl eared. $5 a day for 3 days and

made my little $10 ½ this fine noon on cigars and watches. Just as soon as I get money enough I am coming home on a furlough they had a great McClell an meeting these last week and a fool of a Sergeant by the name of Brammer got up and gave three lashes for Old Abe they told him to stop but he wouldnt [sic] and they pounded him almost in to a jelly and he has been in bunk ever since. The state of Conn - will go for little Mc this time so everyone thinks. and I think so too. Last night 4 Subs jumped the fence three of them got away. but one

4 was run through the body with a baynot [sic] that killed him in an instant they tried to keep it still but it leaked out however. Bill Hunt is here he came here last Tuesday and is agoing [sic] to get this discharge on account of his big belly which is bigger than ever he is making lots of money on watches and dont [sic] mind staying here awhile. I saw John Traverse here to day he came friday. Elnore Briggs has gone to City Point with Recruits, I wish you would send those towels if you have a good chance and some thing [sic] else too if you

I have got a nice picture album and I want you to send me your picture tell Kate to send hers and Jane Havens John’s Lukes and every good Looking person you can find Geo B and Archbishop hughes head my list send me one of those Jim merrill took of me and I will send you one in return that I am having taken here, Let me know where John is and what he is going to do. We sent around 1000 men the other day and there are about 1500 more left. I know of no more at present to write give my love to ma and tell her I hope she is enjoying good health
